Aviemore, Cycling & Mount...

The Rothiemurchus forest and Glenmore forest park of the Cairngorms have a wealth of single track paths and forest roads for riders to explore. Currently (at the time of writing) there are no graded or way-marked routes so it is vital to take an Ordnance Survey map and a compass or use the services of a local mountain bike guide. The tracks and roads lead through traditional pine forests that abound with wildlife, all of it protected under the rules of the national park.

The wild and beautiful hillsides of the Cairngorm Mountain’s provide an altogether different proposition. More suited to seasoned mountaineers and Sherpa’s (because some routes require bike carrying) these trails often involve tough climbs and descents over very rough ground. And it’s these mountains that provide the setting for many traditional mountain bike trails, especially those of the long distance variety. Names like the Gaik Pass or the Ryvoan Pass not only conjure up Lord of the Rings-esque imagery but set the mouths of cross country mountain bikers in the know watering.

This environment offers something for everyone; from families looking for gentle forest ambles to hardened athletes looking to slog it out on a rugged mountainside. Aviemore is simply an A1 mountain biking destination that surely merits a visit.
