Braemar, Climbing

Climbers are spoiled here as just a few miles to the east, at the Pass of Ballater there is a sunny slab of granite right by the roadside. This particular lump of rock provides plenty of technical routes, but is not the only place to climb in this neck of the woods. Lochnagar and Glen Clova, both to the southeast of Braemar offer a good variety of climbs and scrambles. A trip to Glen Clova would probably require an overnight stay if you were to walk there. However, cycling in via Glen Muick would make a day trip more viable.

The Northern Cairngorms offer climbers even greater choice and anyone armed with a tent and provisions for several days can really make the most of them. On Cairngorm alone you could spend more than a week clambering around and still have plenty of routes to try out. While the eastern flanks of neighbouring Ben MacDui serve up ample options for climbers of all abilities. Closer to Braemar, the granite buttresses of Bheinn A’Bhuird’s Garbh Choire prove relatively more accessible, and also offer several days worth of climbing. Fill your boots! Oops sorry! Climbers where ballet shoes don’t they?
