France, Walking & Hiking

France is a country of stark contrasts when it comes to walking holidays. For one it boasts several mountainous areas including the Alps and the Pyrenees both of which are tremendous hiking destinations. While relatively low lying regions such as the Loire in the centre of the country or Brittany on the Atlantic coast offer distinctly more genteel alternatives.

Wherever you are in France you’re never far from one of the Grande Randonnée (GR) long distance walking routes that can also be found throughout Spain, Portugal, Belgium and The Netherlands. Collectively these GR routes cover roughly 60,000km of marked trails and between them boast a spectacular diversity of rural landscapes well worth experiencing.

From many of France’s typical alpine villages hikers can sample an extensive range of walking route options without the need to subscribe to anything longer than a couple of miles in total. And in certain locations walkers can reach higher altitudes by utilising resort lift systems which often remain open in summer for just that purpose.
