Italy, Skiing & Snowboarding

Italy is home to some truly magnificent ski resorts and some of the most extensive ski domains in the world. In the north east in an area known as the Sud Tirol (South Tirol) – as it once belonged to Austria – the craggy limestone peaks of the Italian Dolomites are the venue for some spectacularly scenic skiing. Over on the other side of the country near the border with Switzerland the opportunities for epic off-piste ski and snowboard touring adventures on the flanks of some of Europe’s highest peaks are mouth wateringly tantalising. While not far south and west of here several ski stations have formed partnerships with their French neighbours creating super sized cross–border ski domains.

However, none of these partnerships has produced anything sizable enough to rival the Dolomiti Superski region that offers in excess of 1000km of pistes and is accessed from more than twenty villages and hamlets.

Italy’s Apennine Mountains also boast some ski stations albeit much smaller entities than their Alpine counterparts. And some of these are located only a short distance from Rome.
